Cover Drafts

Image
In order to begin the construction of a magazine, the first thing that must be done is to draft out the layout of the cover page. So in this post, I will be reviewing five potential layouts to use in my technology magazine. Cover Layout #1 - For this first layout, I decided to make a very simple design to set a place for the other designs to alter off of.  To begin with, I set the masthead in the most generic spot, the top. While its position is very typical, the typeface that I chose is sans serif, which follows the conventions of tech magazines. I also decided to use a sans serif font for the rest of the layouts. As for the main image, I chose to put a very rough illustration of a PC. This is because I plan to talk about computer parts inside the magazine, so I made the main image correspond with the rest of the magazine. The headline is directly to the left of the main image in order for it to be one of the first things that the viewer gets drawn to.  Lastly, I have ...

Magazine Design and Layout Research

Image
When producing a magazine, it is very important that the design of it is appealing for viewers no matter what genre the magazine is. In this post, there will be 10 tips on how to design a magazine in a way that will make its appearance more appealing to the reader: 1.  Illustrations can be very impactful. Many magazines feature photos for their images throughout their magazines, but in some cases having an illustration can be more appealing to the readers and will incline them to read further. By adding illustrations, magazines will also be able to look very unique when compared to other magazines. As seen in the image below, using illustrations can give a very modern and design-heavy feeling to readers.  The way that designers are able to make these illustrations is by manipulating vector artwork. Vector artwork is made up of what is call vector graphics, which are lines, curves, and shapes based on mathematical formulas. This artwork is useful because no matter how mu...

Color Theory

Image
What is  ¨Color Theory¨: Color theory is the science of manipulating color in order to find the best color combination. The color wheel, which was created by Sir Isaac Newton in 1666, is the base of understanding color theory (picture to the left). On the color wheel, each color is described as primary, secondary, or tertiary based on its wavelength.  There are two types of color wheels, the RGB (made for online use) and the RYB (made for mixing paint), however, the main focus of this post will be the RGB color wheel. The primary colors for the RGB color wheel are red, green, and blue, the secondary colors are mixes of the primary colors, and tertiary colors are mixes of the primary colors and secondary colors. The color wheel shows the relationship between all the colors. Designers strive to find the perfect combination of two or more of these colors to create the most pleasing effect on the reader; this is called color harmony . The colors on the color wheel can also b...

Font Psychology

Image
What is a typeface and font?      To dive into font psychology, the first thing that must be known is what a font and a typeface is. A font is simply the size and design of a letter. There are over half a million fonts that have been created and each font is unique in its own way. A typeface is a "family" to help put said fonts into groups. An example of this is in the image below, where it is shown that Helvetica is a typeface, and everything else is a variation, or font of the typeface. What is "Font Psychology"   It is in human nature to give human characteristics such as emotions and thoughts to specific images that they see. Because of this, many companies have now started to manipulate this psychology and use fonts and colors that will make their readers perceive the brand in a way that makes them more likely to remember the information given or even drive them to make purchases.  An example of this being implemented can be viewed in the image below. In t...
