Peer Feedback & Revisions

Image
In this blog, the previous TOC mockups will be revised into the final TOC. The revisions that will be made to the TOC will be based off of recommendations that have come from peers. There were many ideas that were received, so there will be categories for them. Additionally, these changes will be made to the first page of the TOC first, then there will be more categories for the second page to keep everything organized. Page One: Before all of these changes start to be made, here is the original mockup that will altered: Masthead - Originally, the masthead name was put as the title of the pages, but there was some feedback that said instead of "Techlight" the title should simply be changed to "Contents". This was implemented into the TOC, and this turned out to be a very excellent change. This is because it is too repetitive to have the large masthead name in both the cover and the TOC, so it is better to take the more simplistic approach and use "Contents...

TOC Mockups, Process, and Final Choice

Image
In this blog, two mockups for the TOC will be constructed with documentation on every step of the process. When this process is over, one of them will be chosen to be implemented in the final TOC. Both of these TOCs will be used with Canva as the editor of choice. Mockup #1 - This mockup will be based of layout #3 from the previous post that contains research for TOCs. The idea for this layout is that there will be very many images and that it will be simple enough that the reader will be guided by the page from top to bottom on both pages. The design looks like this: The first thing that has to be done in Canva is to add a second page, as this design features two pages instead of one. This is done by clicking the "add page" button on the bottom of the screen when editing. Now that this is done, I will do the work of each page at a time, beginning with the left page. For the masthead, I put the title "TECHLIGHT" in the top left in red just like how it was on the ma...

TOC Images and Content

Image
In this post, the actual images and written content for the TOC will be created. There will be a total of five different images that will be taken and edited for the TOC. Images - Image #1 - The first image that will be used in the TOC is a laptop, as seen to the right. This laptop is the same one that was used in one of the cover lines on the cover, except it has been flipped horizontally through the flip feature on Canva. This image was taken because it will be great for an article that can be about MacBooks. This clearly matches the conventions of tech magazines as it is a laptop which is a common thing to see in tech magazines. Assuming that the layout would be similar to the third sketch of the previous blog post, this laptop image will likely be put on the right page as one of the less focused articles. Image #2 -  For this second picture, I would be using an image of a PlayStation 4. Since this image has not been used for the cover, it still needed to be edited, as se...

Table of Contents Analysis and Plans

Image
When making a magazine, the table of contents (TOC) is one of the most important aspects to designers. Since it is often the first page inside of the magazine and is a central hub that directs the readers to the exact topics they are interested in, it is very important that it is kept appealing while still doing its job for the readers. The TOC can be made with any elements that the designer desires such as a new color scheme, images, and even choosing if it takes one or two pages. There are many different layouts of TOCs depending on the genre, but for this post there will only be tech TOCs being analyzed and created. Analysis -  The first of three TOCs that will be broken down is one made by PCMag, which can be seen to the right. To begin with, they obviously both take up a two page spread instead of just one page. This is likely to make sure that everything is not too clustered together to prevent the reader from feeling overwhelmed. The color scheme makes a good combinati...

Final Cover Choices and Edits

Image
In this post, the final cover for the magazine will be made. So far in this process, Canva has been used as the only editing software. The goal for this cover is to seem modern which can be achieved by making the cover simplistic and clean-looking. This goal follows the conventions of tech magazines as this is very common among said magazines. Out of the two mockups that were made earlier, the one above is the one that was chosen for the final cover. While this was the design that was going to be implemented into the final cover, each of its components still needed some revisions as it was still only a mockup. Masthead -  The first thing that needed to be changed was the masthead. As seen, there was still no name for the masthead so that was the first issue. I figured that it should have the work "tech" somewhere in it. This is because viewers would informed immediately that it is a tech magazine from the word "tech" , but if I put "fashion" in it, they w...

Cover Photo Editing and Selection

Image
In this post, the potential photos for the magazine cover will be edited. For this process, Canva will be used as the photo editor medium of choice. Additionally, there will be four images in use with some of these potentially being used as the images for the main image and others being used for the cover line images. For all of these images, the goal is to make very minuscule edits in order to promote a simplistic feeling in the viewers. This is because often, tech magazines attempt to make their covers simple for a more straightforward approach that makes it easier for viewers to obtain the information they want. Now that this has been established, it is time to look into the editing. Image 1 - The original image for this edit is below. This image is likely going to be used as the main image, depending on which layout is chosen for the final cover. This picture was chosen because it is a computer, which will be the main topic of the magazine. To begin with, the first thing that ...
