Cover Photo Editing and Selection

In this post, the potential photos for the magazine cover will be edited. For this process, Canva will be used as the photo editor medium of choice. Additionally, there will be four images in use with some of these potentially being used as the images for the main image and others being used for the cover line images.

For all of these images, the goal is to make very minuscule edits in order to promote a simplistic feeling in the viewers. This is because often, tech magazines attempt to make their covers simple for a more straightforward approach that makes it easier for viewers to obtain the information they want.

Now that this has been established, it is time to look into the editing.

Image 1 -

The original image for this edit is below. This image is likely going to be used as the main image, depending on which layout is chosen for the final cover. This picture was chosen because it is a computer, which will be the main topic of the magazine.

To begin with, the first thing that needed to be changed is that the background needed to be removed. To do this, I used the background remover feature on Canva to easily get the job done. By doing this, Canva also makes the background that was removed transparent, so that it blends with the image. Now, the image looks like this:

After this, the next change that I decided to make was to make the green and purple stand out more in order for the background to have better contrast with the background. In order to do this, I simply messed with the saturation settings on Canva and found out that setting it to 70 is perfect. By doing this, the visual appeal increases greatly.

After this, I was done editing this image.

Image 2 -

The second image that was used can be seen below. For this image, the intent was either to be a cover line image or the main image depending on which layout will be implemented. This picture of a mouse is very useful because it will likely be a part of the interior of the magazine.

Like the previous image, the first thing that needed to be done is to remove the background. This was also used by Canva's background remover tool.

Because the picture had the mouse appear facing down, the next thing that needed to be done is to flip the picture upside down. This was easy, as all that I needed to do was use the "Flip Vertically" feature of Canva's photo editor.

After that was done, this image was finished. The reason that there was not more done to the image like there was in image 1 is that this image is likely going to be not as significant in the cover, and it will not contribute to the color scheme of the cover.

Image 3 -

For this final image, I edited a picture of headphones, as can be seen below. This image, like image 2, was intended to be the main image or a cover line image depending on the chosen layout. This image will also be elaborated on later in the magazine.

Since I obviously did not want to keep that background, I used Canva's background remover tool to remove the background.

Once the background was removed, I was finished with editing. There was nothing more to do since this picture is only black and cannot be enhanced anymore.

Conclusion

Through this process, I learned many things about photo editing.

Firstly, I learned that each picture requires a different amount of changes depending on the amount of color in it and the purpose it has. For example, in image 1, there were a lot more changes than there were in image 3. This is because image 1 features vibrant colors and is going to be an important image, whereas image 3 is all black and will likely not be the center of attention.

I also found that editing is very easy with Canva, as the website is very user-friendly. I quickly learned how to add filters, alter the saturation, and even remove the background.

In the end, these images follow the conventions of the tech genre of magazines because they have not been altered greatly by adding something such as a filter over them and are kept simple and straight to the point.
